Giant farming drone gives Gold Coast students a taste of future jobs

A giant drone capable of spraying crops and spreading fertiliser today gave Gold Coast students a glimpse of careers beyond the classroom.
Measuring more than 3.2 metres long and wide with its arms and propellers extended, the DJI Agras T100 was the centrepiece of today’s technology showcase at Miami State High School.
Standing almost a metre tall, the aircraft has a 100-litre spray tank and can be fitted with equipment to spread seed and fertiliser, showing students how drone technology is changing farming.
Miami’s Year 9 IDEAS (STEM) students watched on as the giant drone sprayed water onto the school oval. The students will be among hundreds of local schoolchildren attending Future Careers Day, presented by Griffith University, at next week’s Global Drone Show.

Next Friday’s three-hour program will connect students with drones, robotics, live demonstrations and people working across aviation, agriculture, engineering, defence, broadcast, entertainment and conservation.
Global Drone Show chief executive Leanne St George said the school visit brought those possibilities to life.

“This is a serious piece of farming equipment, and seeing it on their school oval gives students a very different understanding of what a drone can do,”

— Ms St George

“Behind it are careers in engineering, coding, aviation and agriculture. We want students to meet the people doing those jobs and see where their interest in technology could take them.”
